Kai's Day - J J Johnson & Kai Winding
Nice, boppish tune from the '50s. I listed the leaders as J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding but actually I think that all four trombones could be considered the leaders, if there is a leader at all. I believe the original recording was called "Jazz Workshop - Trombone Rapport" which I think had 2 volumes. My copy is from the 4-CD set "The Debut Records Story" and this is from Disc 2. This was from a live recording at the Putnam Central Club in NYC in 1953. Elsewhere, this tune apparently is called "Kai's Kid". If you're looking to get this yourself, it may be a little difficult. It took me a long time to find it at a reasonable price. Personnel:
J.J.Johnson - Trombone
Kai Winding - Trombone
Bennie Green - Trombone
Willie Dennis - Trombone
John Lewis - Piano
Charles Mingus - Bass
Art Taylor - Drums

Great modern version of a classic from the '60s. This is from a 2-disc CD tribute to the late, great vibraphonist, Bobby Hutcherson. It's by a group of musicians headed by Brian Blade. The CD set is called "Lifecycles Volumes 1 & 2: Now! and Forevermore". Vol. 1 contains all the tunes which were on Bobby Hutcherson's Blue Note album "Now!". This tune is "Black Heroes". Recorded in October, 2018...

This is a very serene and simple tune by the leader, Duke Jordan, who is featured only on one side of this recording. From the album "The East and West of Jazz" on old the "Charlie Parker Records" label but resissued here on CD on the "Modern Jazz Connection" label. On this CD, it says the name of the tune is "Tall Grass" but this is wrong as Duke has recorded "Tall Grass" several times and it ...

This is an obscure song on an obscure label but it's one of my favorites. It deserves a better title. From an album called "The East and West of Jazz" on the "Charlie Parker Records" label but reissued here on CD on the "Modern Jazz Connection" label. It features Sadik Hakim on one side and Duke Jordan on the other. Sadik was one of the early bebop pianists (known then as Argonne Thornton) and ...

Another nice, up-tempo tune from the great "Sail Away" CD. This is Tom's composition, as are all the songs on this CD. Recorded in March 1989. On the Contemporary label. Nice, reflective modal tune from Bobby. I believe this is the original. This tune has been recorded many times by Bobby and others but this is my favorite. Featuring the great Harold Land and a young, pre-RTF Chick Corea. From the classic CD "Total Eclipse". Recorded in 1968 on the Blue Note label. Personnel: Bobby Hutcherson - Vibes Harold Land - Tenor Sax Chick Corea - Piano Reggie Johnson - ...

This full song is available elsewhere on YT but I thought it would be nice to have just the vocal portion on YT also. This "voz e violao" arrangement is my favorite version of this well-known Jobim tune. The singer is Maria Booker, wife, at the time, of the guitarist, Walter Booker, and AFAIK she hadnt recorded a song commercially either before or after this. She does a very poignant rendition ...

Very nice rendition of this tune she co-wrote w Dave Frishberg. She's done up-tempo versions of this but I really like this slow version better. It has a very somber mood to it that is appropriate for the song's lyrics.. Released originally on Daffodil Records.in 1976. Personnel: Blossom Dearie - Vocals and Electric Piano

Nice version of this Johnny Mercer tune from the inimitable Blossom Dearie (yeah, that's her real name). I guess you could call this one of her "signature" songs. From the album/CD of the same name. The cover pictured above is from the album. My CD has a different cover. Originally issued on the Daffodil records label, it is reissued here on the BMD label. Personnel: Blossom Dearie - Piano and ...

Back when overhand pitching motion, no batting or sliding gloves, stirrups & sanitary socks, no arm pads and on outs, the entire infield would throw the ball around ending w the 1st baseman throwing to catcher who throw to 3rd baseman who then flipped back to pitcher. This is when the game was GREAT. No overpaid soft primadonnas. Even the OLD Yankee stadium & Forbes Field before cookie cutter ballparks.

@@jazznik2 Wow. The best of I have was sanctioned by none other than Joe Sample himself (who chose all the selections personally). You don't suppose the same thing happened with this tune that occurred on Billy Joel's debut album (Cold Spring Harbor) when his then record label sped up all his vocal tracks to the point where he sounded like Alvin and The Chipmunks?

In 1970 at age 11 I bought a copy of ' The World Series ' published by the Sporting News. It contained records ( box scores & statistics) of every World Series dating back to 1905. I was fascinated reading this historical account. 1960 stood out as the oddest World Series. Every Yankees win was a rout while Pittsburgh eeked out one run wins leading up to game 7. And then this game. Most improbable World Series champions ever were the 1960 Pirates!

Pre season that year Pittsburg came to Salt Lake City for an exhibition game. The Salt Lake Bees were their minor league team. I was 9 years old. My coach pointed at the field and said “that is second base watch him that’s where you are going to play and you want to play like him”. I have been a Pirates fan my whole life.

I love this! In fact, that whole album is full of delights offered up by the late great Marian McPartland. What a life she led! @@jazznik2 You are so lucky for being able to have heard her perform! She was not only a marvelous musician, but she was also just a nice and gracious person. In her jazz programs, she was always so welcoming and attentive to her guests. And, of course, she was hugely knowledgable about jazz and music in general. It must have been great fun to have been able to be a guest in one of her jazz programs!

I worked in James Alex Summer Theater in Dayton Ohio in 1961 at Memorial Hall, where Fran starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her voice was still good, and she belted out the songs and filled the theater. I have often wondered why she did not become a major Broadway star. She could belt them out with the best.
